Recording Instructions and Advice

If you choose to submit a video audition, it is of utmost importance that you take the time to properly set up your audio and video for success. Please make sure the metronome is clearly audible and balanced (as much as possible) to your playing volume. Do your best to eliminate any distractions (both visual and audible) that may get in the way of our focus on your abilities.

Guidelines for Submitting a Video for Consideration

1. Upload your video to YouTube as an unlisted video.
2. In the video’s description, please place time stamps denoting where each new exercise begins (for example — 0:45 – OcTWOves, 2:00 – 16th Note Timing, etc.).
3. Send your YouTube link to Gilbert Garcia Jr at ggarcia115.115@gmail.com and Frank Salinas at fastenor@hotmail.com
4. Please type your name and “Paragon 2024 Video Audition” as the title of your video. Feel free to include any information you deem necessary in the video as well.

Please only submit the instrument (or instruments) that you are interested in playing. If you decide to submit videos for more than one instrument, you’ll need to make separate videos (following the criteria listed above for each) and include the link for each in your email. It would also help to write this information in the body of your email so that we don’t miss it as we’re looking through everyone’s submissions.

Recording Tips for Your Consideration

1. Distance: Position yourself far enough away where your hands, posture, and instrument are fully visible within the frame of the video.
• Keyboards / Synthesizer: Full view of the designated register, including pedal if applicable.
• Drum set / Bass Guitar: Full view of setup
2. Audio Levels: Be sure the camera, and/or audio recorder, picks up the instrument’s audio without any distortion. It would be wise to check your audio settings to make sure your sounds aren’t clipping and/or distorted. If you have the ability, use a mic to help get a solid recording.
3. Hone Our Focus: Please take time to frame the video in a way that makes it easy for us to focus on your playing. People walking through the background, a lot of visual clutter, and wandering pets are all things to try to eliminate from inclusion in your video audition.
4. Audible Metronome: We ask that every exercise is accompanied with a clearly audible metronome as a reference for tempo. This helps us evaluate your ability to play in time and is an essential basis of our feedback to you.
